St. Annes Lifeboat Memorial

March 30th 2008. The memorial at St. Annes marks the loss of the entire lifeboat crew on 9th December 1880. They set out in stormy weather to rescue a German barque called Mexico, but all the crew died in the attempt.
A 'barque' must be a type of old sailing ship (a similar term to 'clipper' etc.) as Captain Cook's ship is sometimes referred to as 'the barque Endeavour' and that went and found Australia.
The Mexico, however, only found the sandbank off Lytham.
Still, they must have been big ships in their day.

You shouldn't see these anywhere else....

22nd March 2008. Ewood Park corner flag. Being the only professional club to have won the FA Cup three years on the trot, The Rovers are the only team officially allowed to have their club crest on the pitch flags. Other teams do the same now (Manure, the Rentboys and the Dippers being three who feel the need to highjack our history....), but the laws state that all others should be a plain design.
Match result: Rovers 3 (Santa Cruz 2, Roberts) Wigan 1 (SoF pen.)

Claudius at Bispham.

15th March 2008. Claudie stands in front of Mount Bispham on his second birthday.
The mountain is ballast supplies for the tramway which is being overhauled.

15th March 2008. Hopper Suction Dredger at Fleetwood, in the Wyre estuary. Working to deepen the ferry berth.

Riverdance claimed by the sand.

March 15th 2008. Riverdance has now rolled to 100 degrees and is starting to sink deck first into the sand. Plans to attempt a refloat have been shelved and the ship may now be broken up on the beach. This photo was taken from Cleveleys promenade at the edge of the exclusion zone with the digital zoom, so it's a bit crap.

Fish

9th March 2008. From the back of The Windsor Suite in Blackburn.
Not the best photo as I couldn't work out how to do the digital zoom or what kind of setting I wanted. So it's just a 'point and click'. Fish is the middle of the three blobs (wearing a 'SAVE PLANET ROCK' t shirt). Foss Patterson is on the right doing keyboards (white headed blob). Blob with guitar is Steve Vantsis on bass.
A good night was had by most (Helen doesn't quite get Fish, but clapped along at roughly the right times. She later trapped off with the support band 'GLYDER' whilst collecting their autographs after the show).

Running the gauntlet!

8th March 2008. It's only 100 yards from where this picture was taken to 'Lucky Turnstile D1', which is in the middle distance at the far side of the main glass fronted section of The Blackburn End.
It is 1pm, the turnstiles have just opened and the coast looks clear.
The mission is to get from this point to the turnstile without being asked to sign up for "your Club's credit card" at least twice.
This simple task has yet to be achieved.
By anyone.
The green coated MBNA reps have the same ability as the shopkeeper in Mr Benn to appear 'as if by magic'. Like U Boats they tend to hunt in pairs and will patiently watch as you fend off the challenge of one of their colleagues, only to nab you a few yards further along and ask the same bloody question.
I don't understand how they can look so hurt when the second one is asked if they are attempting some form of humour and that, if inserted in the right way, a good place for their card could be suggested.
Sometimes I am not Mr. Angry and just sign up anyway.
Sometimes I even use my own name.
Match result: Rovers 1 (Gamst) Fulham 1 (SoF)

More from the Marina

6th March 2008. A better picture of the new Marina. This gives some impression of the depth and also a view of the rather smart Tonka type vehicles that are being used. Never mind a 4x4, these are the things to use off road!

Claudius 'in profile'.

Barden Marina

March 3rd 2008. New canal barge marina being built next to Barden Mill. Should be ready for autumn. Looking where the entrance to the marina will be. Rear embankment carries railway line.
